Website name change (Full Story)


As of today, our website will start the transition to to help promote ourselves as a charity and not a business. Our current 'domain' name was registered on 9th February 2000, almost 15 years ago, when the choice of extension ( etc) was limited.

Our publicity will start to reflect these changes immediately and email addresses will also change over the next few months.

To reduce problems in the changeover, we will keep out current site and email active for 1 or 2 years.

458th BG Take to the skies (Full Story)

On Sunday 24 December 1944, the 458th Bomb Group based here at Horsham St Faith sent fifty nine B-24 Liberators on missions to Schomecken, Wetteldorf and Hellenthal.

After a period of poor weather when foggy conditions had kept the group grounded, Christmas Eve 1944 had conditions of unlimited visibility and the allowed the USAAF to launch a maximum effort against airfields and communication centres in Germany.

This mission would be the largest air operation of the Second World War. One Horsham St Faith Liberator was lost after a direct hit by anti-aircraft fire.

On display at the Museum is a photograph of B-24 Liberators taking off from Horsham St Faith on this mission. The houses along the Cromer Road along the A140 can be clearly seen and are still a familiar sight to users of Norwich Airport today.

Despite the large scale of this operation, the first mission from Horsham St Faith since 12 December 1944, airman of the 458th Bomb Group arranged a Christmas party for local children on 23 December 1944 and from our archive, we have a photograph of this event.

The passing of Gerhard Heilig and Geoff Williams (Full Story)

This year, the City of Norwich Aviation Museum was saddened to hear of the passing of two Royal Air Force veterans who supported us over many years.

Gerhard Heilig

Gerhard arrived in England in England as a refugee from Nazi persecution in 1938.

After being educated in Yorkshire and working as a telephone engineer he joined the RAF and completed a tour of operations with 214 Squadron flying as a special operator in Boeing Fortress aircraft and then with the Lancasters of 101 Squadron operating from Ludford Magna.

His fluent German made him invaluable for the electronic counter measure role that both 214 Squadron and 101 Squadron undertook.

After leaving the RAF, Gerhard had a long career in civil aviation and was a pilot with Austrian Airlines until his retirement.

Gerhard passed away at his home in Austria in late October 2014.

Geoff Williams

Geoff served as a pilot flying Gloster Meteors from RAF Horsham St Faith (now Norwich international Airport) with 245 Squadron in the early 1950’s.

With the Horsham Wing he took part in the flypast over London for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

Geoff became an engineering officer on the English Electric Lightning and retired from the RAF as a Squadron Leader.
